Being one of those Android user who badly wanted their hands on last year's flagship device from Samsung, Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge users but refrained owing to their drawbacks, we sure are in for one hell of a delight with Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge were the sexiest smartphones ever launched by the brand but they both have had their drawbacks. It seems that Samsung has been paying close attention to customer feedback and done away with two major flaws in last year's flagship smartphone. The result is stunning Galaxy S7 Edge, which feels every bit the premium device that it is and is seer delight just to hold it in your hand. Here is a brief overview of the handset for those who are planning to buy it.
Design
At first glance, you could be forgiven to mistake the Galaxy S7 for last year's Galaxy S6 as there is not much different in the front panel of these handsets. However, as soon as you pick up the newest flagship that you realise what has been changed. The new handset comes with the same premium glass and metal chassis, however, Samsung has made the rear camera to sit flush with the rear panel. The protruding camera was the main grievance that users had with Galaxy S6 Edge, which was more prone to damage and scratches, which has now been taken care of by the brand. The glass back of the handset is slightly curved toward the edges, which makes it quite comfortable to hold. Another design change in the handset is that it now support expandable microSD card through a hybrid SIM card tray, which is not Hybrid per se but just accepts a microSD and nano SIM card.
Display
Samsung has equipped the new Galaxy S7 Edge with a larger 5.5-inch display that curves on both sides. The size of the display is larger than last year's Galaxy S6 Edge, however, it is Samsung's solution to eliminate the need for launching a plus size variant of the same. The display comes with a resolution of Quad-HD viz. 1440 x 2560 pixels, which ensures a stunning viewing experience. The display panel is Samsung's signature AMOLED, which offers better contrast and sharpening as compared to regular display panels. Samsung has also equipped the new handset with an Always On feature, which constantly shows a clock with notifications, a calendar, or an image. The cause of worry here is that it is not motion activated but rather stays on at all times, which may result in huge battery drain. However, Samsung assures that it is not a cause of worry since it will only consume half a per cent battery every hour.
User Experience
Samsung has launched the new smartphone with Android Marshmallow (6.0) operating system pre-installed in it, which is equipped with features like Doze and monthly security patches. The Samsung Touchwiz is a little dampener owing to its bloatware and lags. However, Samsung toned down the bloatware in Touchwiz on Samsung Galaxy S6/Edge, and the same Touchwiz UI features on the newest Galaxy S7 Edge as well.
Performance and Battery Life
The South Korean handset maker has launched the new smartphone with an Octa-core processor running under the hood. Samsung has clocked the new handset at a speed of 1.6 GHz, which is slightly lower than other flagships though barely noticeable. The brand has accompanied the SoC of the handset with a massive 4 GB of RAM for enhanced smoothness and performance. The rear panel of the device accommodates a more powerful 3600 mAh battery for a longer backup.
Camera Technology
Galaxy S7 marks another significant changes in camera department, which is a 12 Megapixels unit down from 16 Megapixels on Galaxy S6 Edge. However, Samsung assures that the new lower resolution primary camera is equipped with a “Dual Pixel” camera module, which lets in more light and thus result in brighter and crisper results. The front panel on the other hand features a 5 Megapixels selfie snapper for clicking good selfies.
Connectivity
Samsung has always been known to equip its flagships generously in terms of connectivity options and Galaxy S7 Edge also boasts of features like Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Miracast, Bluetooth, microUSB, GPS, NFC and USB OTG. This dual-SIM smartphone also features support for both 4G LTE and 3G to ensure high speed Internet connectivity.
Verdict
With the Galaxy S7 Edge, the South Korean handset maker has managed to create that one device that is perfect in all sense. The brand has done away with the flaws of Galaxy S6 Edge and has come up with an ideal smartphone, which we would simply love to get our hands on. However, the only catch here will be the exorbitantly premium price tag.
